We can’t be koi, our pond needs your help! At the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens (DABG), we are committed to preserving the beauty and tranquility of our gardens. One of the most beloved features of our Japanese Garden is the koi pond, which provides a serene environment for visitors and supports a thriving ecosystem. However, this peaceful oasis is facing a critical challenge, and we need your help.

The Challenge: Murky Water and an Aging Pump. Our koi pond occasionally appears murky due to the lack of a filtration system. Additionally, the current pump, which is over 30 years old, is no longer powerful enough to circulate the water effectively. As a result, the pump frequently shuts off, and the waterfalls, which are a focal point of the pond’s beauty, often stop running. Without a new pump and filtration system, the pond’s health and aesthetics continue to decline.

Why a Filtration System is Essential. To restore the koi pond’s vibrant ecosystem, we need to install a high-quality filtration system that includes:

Mechanical Filters: These filters will trap and remove debris, keeping the water clear and healthy.

UV Filters: These will use ultraviolet light to control algae growth and eliminate harmful pathogens that can affect both the koi and plant life in the pond. A new filtration and pump system will improve the clarity of the water, promote the health of the koi, and enhance the overall visual appeal of the pond.

Why This Investment Matters. The installation of this new system is a significant but necessary investment—approximately $300,000. While this is a substantial amount, the benefits to our garden and the community are invaluable:

Reduced Chemical Use: A proper filtration system minimizes the need for chemicals and labor-intensive maintenance.

Improved Water Quality: Clean water will eliminate foul odors caused by decaying organic matter and create a healthier environment for our koi and other aquatic life.

Enhanced Aesthetics: Functional waterfalls and clean, clear water will make the koi pond a more inviting and beautiful destination for our visitors.
