Business Intern

Position Type: Volunteer Internship or Work Study

Job Summary: We are seeking a proactive and organized Business Student to join our team at the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. This position offers college students the chance to gain hands-on experience in gift shop management, office administration, event booking, and supporting the marketing team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Gift Shop Management

Assist in the daily operations of the gift shop, including inventory management, merchandising, and customer service.

Help with product selection and ordering.

Maintain an attractive and organized shop environment.

  • Office Administration

Perform general office duties such as answering phones, managing emails, and filing documents.

Assist with data entry and maintaining records.

Support administrative tasks to ensure smooth office operations.

  • Event Booking and Coordination

Manage inquiries and bookings for events and weddings.

Coordinate with clients to understand their needs and ensure successful events.

Assist in planning and organizing events, including logistics and vendor arrangements.

  • Marketing Support

Assist the marketing team with promotional activities and campaigns.

Help create marketing materials such as flyers, newsletters, and social media posts.

Participate in brainstorming sessions to generate new ideas for attracting visitors.

Participate in tours for our guests or potential wedding couples.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Business, Marketing, or related program at a college or university.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Customer service experience is a plus.

Grounds Intern (Biology Student)

Position Type: Volunteer Internship or Work Study

Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Biology Student to join our team as a Grounds Intern at the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in landscaping, plant care, disease identification, and general maintenance of the grounds, while working closely with our Grounds Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Landscaping

Assist in the design and implementation of landscaping projects.

Help with planting, pruning, and maintaining various plant species.

Ensure the aesthetic appeal of the gardens through regular upkeep.

  • Plant Care

Monitor the health of plants and provide necessary care, including watering, fertilizing, and mulching.

Assist in the propagation of plants through seeding, cuttings, and other methods.

Maintain records of plant growth and health.

  • Disease Identification

Learn to identify common plant diseases and pests.

Work with the Grounds Supervisor to develop and apply treatments.

  • General Maintenance

Perform routine maintenance tasks such as mowing, weeding, and mulching.

Assist in the upkeep of garden infrastructure, including pathways, benches, and irrigation systems.

Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored.

  • Learning and Development

Work closely with the Grounds Supervisor to gain practical experience and mentorship.

Conduct research projects as needed related to plant care and garden management.

Participate in tours for our guests or potential wedding couples.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Biology or related program at a college or university.
  • Strong interest in horticulture, plant biology, and environmental science.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of plant care and landscaping is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Social Media Management

Create, schedule, and publish content across social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, Twitter).

Monitor and respond to comments and messages.

Analyze social media metrics to optimize engagement.

  • Event Planning and Coordination

Assist in planning and organizing events, including educational programs, tours, and special events.

Coordinate logistics, such as vendor arrangements, equipment setup, and volunteer management.

Ensure smooth execution of events on the day.

  • Event Setup and Support

Help with the physical setup and breakdown of events.

Provide on-site support during events to ensure everything runs smoothly.

  • Booking Events and Weddings

Assist in managing inquiries and bookings for private events and weddings.

Coordinate with clients to understand their needs and ensure their event is a success.

  • Marketing and Promotion

Develop and implement strategies to generate interest in the arboretum.

Create promotional materials, such as flyers, newsletters, and blog posts.

Think of innovative ideas to attract visitors and increase membership.

  • Community Engagement

Engage with the local community to build relationships and partnerships.

Represent the arboretum at community events and fairs.

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Marketing, Communications, Event Management, or a related field.
